Being the first settlers of the region, the Misyans lived under the Byzantine rule of the Hittite, Phrygian, Persian, Alexander the Great and the Kingdom of Pergamon, respectively. Due to war and invasions, the last ruler of the city, whose population structure was constantly changing, was the Turks.
According to the results of the Address Based Population Registration System of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the population of Balıkesir in 2014 increased above the country average and reached 1 million 189 thousand 57 people. According to the ADNKS results announced by TURKSTAT at the beginning of 2015, 1 million 189 thousand 57 people live in Balıkesir as of December 31, 2014. Accordingly, the annual population growth rate was 22.7 per thousand. In 2013, the population of Balıkesir was 1 million 162 thousand 761 people, and the population growth rate was 1.7 per thousand. Although the population of Balıkesir followed an increasing course, albeit low, it was below Turkey’s average in terms of population growth rate. In 2014, the population growth rate of Balıkesir remained above Turkey’s average growth rate of 13.3 per thousand. Balıkesir’s population increase of 26 thousand 296 people compared to the previous year corresponds to an increase rate of 22.7 per thousand and with this rate of increase, it ranks 58th in the list of provinces. Bandırma, Edremit, Gönen, Ayvalık and Burhaniye are the first five most populous districts after Altıeylül and Karesi, two districts in the center of Balıkesir. The district with the least population is Marmara.
Balıkesir, whose area is 14,272 km2, has 83 people per square kilometer. With this rate, Balıkesir ranks 31st in Turkey in terms of population density.
The proportional distribution of this population consists of 593.529 men and 595.528 women. Proportionally: 49.9% male, 50.1% female.
